Japanese persimmons, Diospyros kaki L., were introduced into the USA from Japan by Admiral Perry who discovered the fruit growing on the coastline of Southern Japan in 1851. The majority of the very early Japanese persimmon introductions in 1828 were grown from seed in Washington, DC, however were unsuccessful, due to the uncommonly cool wintertimes experienced during that period.
