Japanese persimmons, Diospyros kaki L., were presented into the USA from Japan by Admiral Perry who discovered the fruit expanding on the coastline of Southern Japan in 1851. A lot of the early Japanese persimmon intros in 1828 were sprouted from seed in Washington, DC, but were not successful, because of the unusually cool winters months experienced during that period.
