The RCM establishes the functional requirements and the desired performance standards and equipment and then these are related to designed inherent reliability parameters of the machine. For each function, the associated functional failure is defined and the failure modes and effects of the failure function are analyzed. These Consequences of each time failure are established, which fall in of the four categories : Hidden, Safety or Environmental, Operational and Non-operational, fowling the RCM work order software logic, pre-emptive maintenance tasks which will prevent these consequences are selected and provided the applicability and effectiveness criteria for preventive maintenance are satisfied. The applicability requirements refer to the technical characteristics for possible maintenance task and the frequency at which these should be carried out. Effectiveness criteria depends on the consequences of failure, probabilities of the multiple failures for hidden failure for hidden failure consequences, acceptable low risk of failure for safety consequences and nonoperational consequences, when the requirements for planned maintenance are not fulfilled, default tests include failure finding (for hidden failure, possible redesign of equipment procedures and training process) for no scheduled maintenance. RCM was first applied to problematic areas to reduce the maintenance cost in a food processing plant, RCM technique helped in reducing equipment downtime beside achieving reduction in scheduled maintenance load and affecting improvements in equipment availability.
